Reasons for Justin Madubuike’s breakout season

In his initial three seasons in the league, Justin Madubuike, the defensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, hinted at his game-changing potential. However, in the final year of his rookie contract, he has seamlessly blended his skills, marking a remarkable breakout season. Madubuike has set a franchise record by securing at least half a sack in nine consecutive games, leading both the team and all interior defensive linemen with a career-best 10 sacks in 12 games.

When questioned about the factors contributing to Madubuike’s rise to stardom and increased productivity, Ravens Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Line Coach Anthony Weaver emphasized three key elements: tenacity, consistency, and opportunity. Weaver praised Madubuike’s unwavering tenacity, noting his consistent approach to every day, which has translated into remarkable production.

Having spent his initial seasons learning from the seasoned defensive end Calais Campbell, Madubuike found himself with increased playing time after Campbell’s departure. According to Weaver, Madubuike’s growth stems from improved football intelligence, recognition of game dynamics, and refined technique, attributing his success to both recognition and technical proficiency.

Another coach instrumental in the Ravens’ top-ranked pass rush is Chuck Smith, the first-year Outside Linebackers Coach. Smith acknowledged Madubuike’s breakout starting last year, overshadowed by the presence of Campbell and Justin Houston. He commended Madubuike’s willingness to diversify his pass rush moves, resulting in him becoming the first Raven to reach double-digit sacks since Terrell Suggs in 2017.

Weaver highlighted the challenge for opposing offenses in scheming against interior pass rushers, especially when paired with dominant edge rushers. Madubuike’s impact from the interior collapses the pocket, making it challenging for quarterbacks to navigate. Smith described Madubuike as the embodiment of a true “dawg,” consistently aiming to disrupt opponents.

Madubuike’s performance positions him for Pro Bowl and possibly All-Pro recognition, showcasing his consistent disruption in opposing backfields. As a key figure in the Ravens’ formidable defense, the 26-year-old appears poised for a substantial contract, raising speculation about his future with the team. For now, he continues to be a dominant force in the heart of the Ravens’ championship-caliber defense.
