Seahawks Sign Former 12-TD Running Back in Response to Ken Walker’s Injury

The most recent update on the Seattle Seahawks reveals that the team is securing additional support in the running back position by signing rookie SaRodorick Thompson. This decision is prompted by injuries affecting both Ken Walker III and Zach Charbonnet.

Having had an impressive college career at Texas Tech, Thompson is not new to the Seahawks, having already had multiple stints with the team this season. His most recent signing on October 23 was followed by a release just over a week later, as the team had an open practice squad spot due to the Jets taking quarterback Brett Rypien.

Thompson’s standout statistical season was in 2019, where he recorded 160 carries for 765 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with 39 receptions for 154 yards in 12 appearances. Throughout his five seasons with the Red Raiders, Thompson accumulated 540 rushes for 2,664 yards and 40 touchdowns.

As the Seahawks face the San Francisco 49ers as significant 10.5-point underdogs in Week 14, there is uncertainty regarding Ken Walker’s availability. While there are positive indications from coach Pete Carroll about Walker’s performance in practice, it remains to be seen if he will play against the 49ers. Walker has been sidelined for the last two games due to an oblique injury sustained against the Rams on November 19, having recorded 149 carries for 613 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns this season.

The addition of Thompson doesn’t necessarily indicate a negative outlook on Walker’s status. Instead, it reflects the Seahawks’ concern about the need for insurance with both Walker and Charbonnet dealing with injuries. Besides Thompson, the team also has DeeJay Dallas and Kenny McIntosh on the roster.

Looking ahead to the 2023 draft, Thompson, described as “tough and strong” by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, went undrafted but had brief stints with the Saints and Seahawks as a rookie free agent. Zierlein notes that while Thompson possesses various qualities, he needs to demonstrate a more aggressive approach on the field to be a consistent performer in the NFL. The analysis emphasizes Thompson’s toughness and strength but suggests improvement in avoiding indecisiveness and dancing, particularly against faster and more talented NFL defenses. Additionally, showcasing his power and ability to contribute on special teams could enhance Thompson’s chances of securing a spot on an NFL roster.
