Breaking News: Sheffield Wednesday attacker reverses retirement decision with shock signing

Former Sheffield Wednesday attacker George Boyd reverses retirement decision with shock signing

More than two years have passed since former Sheffield Wednesday forward, George Boyd, decided to retire from professional football. The winger, who had a notable stint with the Owls from 2017 to 2019, enjoyed a lengthy career that commenced at Stevenage Borough and concluded at Salford City, with notable stops at clubs like Peterborough United, Burnley, and Hull City. Despite stepping away, Boyd has now chosen to add another chapter to his football journey.

Former Sheffield Wednesday attacker reverses retirement decision with shock signing

On Monday evening, it was officially announced that the 38-year-old has come out of retirement to join Wythenshawe Town in the NWC Premier Division. The club is currently aiming for promotion from the ninth tier of English football in the ongoing season. During his time at Hillsborough, Boyd contributed seven goals and assists in 49 appearances for Wednesday. However, it was his significant impact at London Road with Peterborough United, where he played over 300 games, that solidified his reputation before departing in 2013.

Boyd might make his debut for Wythenshawe Town in the upcoming match against Burscough, as the team strives to strengthen their position at the top of the table. The experienced former Owl’s return to the pitch at Ericstan Park is expected to attract considerable attention. A successful promotion for Wythenshawe this season would propel them into the Northern Premier League Division One, and they are optimistic that Boyd’s presence will contribute to achieving this goal as he laces up his boots once again in Greater Manchester.
