Report: Danny Rohl has January decision as injured Sheffield Wednesday ace nears return

Momo Diaby has taken a significant stride in his journey back to the Sheffield Wednesday first team. Initially loaned to the Owls with a season-long arrangement and an option-to-buy in August, he made his debut just eight days later. Despite an impressive start against Preston North End, where he showcased his skills with two dribbles, three tackles, one interception, and six ground duels, Diaby had to leave the pitch after 65 minutes due to an injury.

Unfortunately, the severity of his injury led Sheffield Wednesday to decide against registering him with the EFL for the first half of the season. After an extensive recovery period, Diaby returned to training a few weeks ago. Recently, he made a full comeback, playing the entire 90 minutes in the Under-21s’ draw against Birmingham City, contributing to a 2-2 scoreline with goals from Luke Cook and Gui Siqueira. Although Diaby won’t be eligible to play for the rest of the year since he isn’t registered, his full 90-minute performance is a promising sign of his recovery.

Now, with Xisco Munoz being the one who signed Diaby in August, the decision of whether to reintegrate him into the squad falls to the German coach, Danny Rohl, who has had limited exposure to the player thus far.

Will Momo Diaby be registered in Sheffield Wednesday’s squad in the new year?

Marvin Johnson joined Sheffield Wednesday’s squad belatedly in October, securing the final spot in the 25-man roster. Consequently, Momo Diaby’s eligibility to play before the new year depends on the removal of another player from the squad.

Diaby aims to make a favorable impression on Danny Rohl during training as Rohl deliberates on squad decisions. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday may consider offloading players to generate funds and create space for potential new additions.

With John Buckley facing a long-term injury and a potential return to Blackburn Rovers in January, there might be an immediate opportunity for Diaby to be integrated into the team. Players such as Tyreeq Bakinson, Mallik Wilks, and Ashley Fletcher could also be candidates for departure.

Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s improved performances with three wins in their last four games, Diaby might face a challenge breaking into the starting lineup. Nevertheless, inclusion in the initial 25-man squad would be a significant relief for him.
