Breaking News: Mike Dean baffled by controversial incident in West Brom v Middlesbrough

Mike Dean was baffled live on air by a controversial incident in the first half of the West Brom game against Middlesbrough on Saturday (23 December).

Discussing on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday at 3:15 pm, the ex-Premier League referee asserted that Cedric Kipre, the 27-year-old center-back, committed a foul as he brought down Isaiah Jones, who was advancing towards the goal. The referee contended that Kipre, being the last defender, should have received a red card instead of the yellow one he was issued at the Riverside Stadium.

According to Dean, Kipre’s actions, which included bringing down the opponent and inadvertently knocking the ball towards the goal with his arm, warranted a red card. He emphasized that it was a clear opportunity to score, making the incident more deserving of a red card for being the last man in defense.

Got away with it

The incident involving Kipre was certainly one where he was fortunate to only receive a yellow card, as a red card could easily have been justified.

The challenge from the Ivorian defender was not ideal, especially as Jones attempted to break through on goal and potentially secure an early lead for Middlesbrough.

Given that Kipre was the last man, Boro manager Michael Carrick would have every right to question why the referee did not issue a red card.

This was an unusual error for Kipre, considering his solid performance throughout the season and the strong partnership he has formed with Kyle Bartley.

Despite escaping serious consequences from that incident, it did little to aid Albion’s cause in the first half, as Morgan Rogers, a former Baggies academy product, managed to give Middlesbrough the lead just before halftime.
