Danny Rohl has received advice from Dom Howson regarding the areas that need reinforcement at Sheffield Wednesday in the coming month.

In their last home game of 2023, Sheffield Wednesday suffered a 2-1 defeat against Cardiff City. Despite Anthony Musaba’s first-half opener for the Owls, Cardiff City came from behind with goals from Karlan Grant and an own goal from Akin Famewo, securing three points for the visitors.

Despite an overall solid performance from Sheffield Wednesday, the outcome was disappointing. The spotlight once again falls on goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, who is facing criticism for an error that led to Cardiff’s second goal. Dawson, 28, failed to secure a shot, deflecting the ball into the path of an oncoming Cardiff attacker, resulting in Famewo inadvertently putting the ball into the net.

While Rohl has defended Dawson, Howson has conveyed to the German manager that there is a pressing need for a new goalkeeper and a fresh striker in the upcoming month.

Dom Howson says Sheffield Wednesday need a goalkeeper and striker

Howson is now strongly encouraging Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday to acquire a new goalkeeper next month, particularly in light of Dawson’s difficulties against Cardiff. Additionally, he emphasizes the need for a new striker. Despite the promising emergence of Bailey Cadamarteri, Sheffield Wednesday still faces a shortage of depth in the attacking third. Bringing in an experienced striker would provide cover for Cadamarteri during the second half of the campaign.

Following yesterday’s game, Howson posted on X:

A crucial month for the Owls

The upcoming January transfer window holds immense significance for Sheffield Wednesday, potentially being their most crucial in several years. Following yesterday’s performance, there is evident room for improvement in the starting eleven, and the stakes are high.

As Howson points out, securing a new goalkeeper appears to be a pressing need. Dawson’s performance against Cardiff arguably cost Sheffield Wednesday at least two points, a luxury they cannot afford given their current position. While James Beadle has been linked with a move to Wednesday, Brighton’s willingness to send him to Hillsborough may hinge on the team’s consistency over the next few weeks.

Additionally, acquiring a new striker to complement Cadamarteri and alleviate some of the pressure on him is deemed equally vital. Scott Hogan from Birmingham City has been mentioned as a potential addition to Sheffield Wednesday’s squad. The club seems poised for more strategic recruitment next month, with Rohl and Head of Recruitment Kevin Beadell taking charge of the proceedings.
