Lewis Hamilton abstains from F1 driver vote as rivals make their feelings clear

Lewis Hamilton opted not to participate in the voting process for the 2023 F1 Driver of the Year. Max Verstappen secured his third consecutive championship title after receiving the majority of votes from his fellow drivers in the annual poll, excluding Hamilton, who chose to abstain.

The voting involves each of the 20 drivers on the grid anonymously selecting their top 10 drivers for the year, assigning scores based on the F1 points system. Verstappen’s outstanding performance, breaking the 500-point barrier in a single season, led to his top-ranking position.

Hamilton, finishing third in the overall standings, was voted second by his peers. Notably, 19 drivers participated in the vote, with Hamilton being the sole driver to refrain from doing so for the second consecutive year.

The rest of the top 10 included Fernando Alonso, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly, Oscar Piastri, Alex Albon, Carlos Sainz Jr., and Sergio Perez, who secured the tenth spot. Notably absent from the top 10 were George Russell and Lance Stroll, the latter being the only top-10 finisher in the Drivers’ Championship not included in the F1 Driver of the Year list for 2023.
