Mercedes is facing criticism from local businesses in Brackley, where its headquarters are located. The controversy revolves around the Formula One team’s proposal to relocate the main entrance of its headquarters to a nearby cul-de-sac in the Northamptonshire town. This move has sparked discontent among Brackley businesses, with some expressing frustration and labeling Mercedes-AMG F1 as “disrespectful.”
The automotive giant intends to expand its Brackley-based campus and has identified St James Road as a new access point for its staff. However, this road currently houses several small businesses, leading to concerns among the local community. Council officers predict a substantial tenfold increase in traffic, adversely affecting the operations of nearby companies.
If the application is approved, the new access point on St James Road will replace the existing entrance on Lauda Drive. The expansion plans also include additional facilities such as marketing and well-being buildings, along with a new car park accommodating 659 vehicles. The West Northamptonshire Council is set to review these proposals next week, on January 9.
Simon Wheeler, the managing director of Canonbury Products Ltd, a specialist foot health supplier, expressed his frustration with the potential traffic disruption caused by the increased number of vehicles entering and exiting the site. Wheeler criticized Mercedes, stating that their actions seem to prioritize their own interests without regard for the impact on smaller businesses that have been present in the area for a comparable duration.
Filip Domozych, the general manager of chrysler.co.uk Ltd, raised concerns about the lack of information provided to businesses regarding the proposed changes. He emphasized that the affected businesses had little knowledge of the plans and their potential consequences, highlighting a need for clearer communication from Mercedes.
