The Tigers have emerged as contenders alongside Florida for a highly sought-after prospect in the transfer portal. LSU’s football staff is actively pursuing talent through the NCAA Transfer Portal, and they have set their sights on Alabama transfer defensive back Jameer Grimsley, who recently entered the portal.
Grimsley, who initially joined Alabama as an early enrollee in January, has chosen LSU and Florida as his top two choices after deciding to leave the Crimson Tide. Despite enrolling early, Grimsley did not see any playing time for Alabama, prompting his decision to explore transfer options.
In high school, Grimsley showcased versatility by playing both cornerback and wide receiver. He becomes the eighth defensive back to enter the Transfer Portal during this offseason, joining a list of players leaving Alabama following Nick Saban’s retirement announcement, including Trey Amos, Caleb Downs, Antonio Kite, Earl Little III, Jake Pope, Dezz Ricks, and Kristian Story.
Grimsley’s recruitment initially came down to Alabama and Florida, with the deciding factor being Corey Raymond, who served as Florida’s defensive backs coach at the time. Now, with Raymond on LSU’s staff, the positive relationship between Grimsley and Raymond has positioned LSU as a finalist alongside Florida.
Although Grimsley is set to take an unofficial visit to Florida, where the Gators are currently the favored destination, LSU’s coaching staff, led by Corey Raymond, remains actively involved in the pursuit of the four-star 2024 prospect.
Corey Raymond, during his previous coaching tenure at LSU from 2012 to 2021, achieved significant success, coaching several players to first-team All-America honors and overseeing multiple early-round selections in the NFL Draft. With a background as a standout defensive back for the Tigers and six seasons in the NFL, Raymond brings valuable experience to LSU’s coaching staff.
Now, as Raymond focuses on recruiting Grimsley, a top defensive back in the Transfer Portal with four years of eligibility, his expertise and passion for LSU’s football program are expected to play a crucial role in the recruitment process.
