You may have a refreshing drink at Sanford Stadium the next time you visit! For those who have always wondered if or when alcohol might be sold inside Sanford Stadium, this is an incredible occasion. I had anticipated it would happen, but it would occur much later. However, beer will be available at Sanford Stadium starting in 2024.
This is a result of the SEC eliminating its prohibition on the selling of alcohol in 2019. In Georgia, alcohol was permitted in private rooms if a sizable donation was made to the Bulldog Club. Later, in 2022, Georgia began to permit alcohol sales during baseball and softball games as well as basketball games at Stegeman Coliseum.
The two last universities to resist the sale of alcohol during football games were Auburn and Georgia. However, it appears that both of them have finally given in.
Naturally, some will be against Georgia eventually lifting this prohibition as a result of this ruling. Clutching their pearls, they’ll declare, “Students shouldn’t be allowed to drink!” I regret to inform you that students either smuggle alcohol into the game or binge drink before it. I did both at the Classic City when I was there. I’ve never understood the rule since those who want to drink will drink.
I am aware of the social and cultural ramifications of alcohol consumption, particularly in the South. However, I believe that rather than creating the problems that we have all seen in the past, selling alcohol inside Sanford Stadium would really assist the situation. I’m referring to the fraternity member who passed away in the intense heat at 11 a.m. inside the stadium or just outside the gates.
At last, Georgia Athletics took this action, and they succeeded. In the coming weeks, I’ll find some little thing to be upset about. For the time being, though, I’m glad the University of Georgia made the appropriate choice.
